Gombe Junior Schools began as one school – the current boarding school which was started by Mr. Kyewalabye Male David and this wife; The Late Rosalind Tanayita. They acquired Stella Maris Primary School – Kikajjo whose dilapidated structures were transformed into the current storied Gombe Junior School. Together with Mr. Ssekitooleko Zaake; the first head teacher, they opened Gombe Junior School to the public in 2013.
The school was named “Gombe” in commemoration of the Mr. Kyewalabye’s grandfather “Mr. Gombe”. According to Mr. Kyewalabye, his grandfather; “Mr. Gombe” was a great educationalist whose passion and commitment to education was outstanding in his family and the entire community. In honour of his legacy, the school was name “Gombe”.
At the start, Gombe Junior School was both day and boarding. However, in 2019, parents of day scholar children expressed the need to have their children study in an all day school since they felt their children were not moving at the same pace with those in the boarding school who receive extra lessons at night, over the weekend and on public holidays. This request of parents of day scholars led to the splitting of Gombe Junior School. The original school remained an entirely boarding school and a new school “Gombe Junior School – Kikajjo” which is an entirely day school was created in 2019.
